How it works

The Guemes Market site is designed to facilitate communication related to the exchange of items on Guemes Island. It doesn't handle financial transactions if needed during an exchange.

It helps Providers communicate what items are available for people to gather, and how they prefer to exchange value (Cash, Venmo, PayPal, Sea Glass, Barter, Friendly Smile, etc.) for the items they have made available.

The next part is critical to the success of this service.

It also helps Consumers communicate back to the Providers and to other Consumers when items are collected and update the availability of items on the Island. When one or more items are collected from a Provider, there is a feature in this system to say 'Thank You' to the Provider, and indicate what items and how many you collected from them. This will notify the Provider, so that they can accept your thank you and update those items and quantities as needed.

NOTE: Your participation in this process is important. The information provided by the service is only as good as what people put into it. If we notice that people are using the site to find and collect items from Providers, but they are not saying Thank You and helping the Provider maintain good inventory information, those accounts could be disabled. We really want this service to be useful and beneficial for everyone. So please participate, and help us do something good for our shared community.

The sections below go into more detail for Consumers and Providers. Any user with an account on this site can be a Consumer, but users have some additional set up to become a Provider.

As a Consumer

Create an Account

As a Consumer of items on the island you want to first create an account through the Register page.

After you have registered and verified your email address, you will have full access to information related to active Providers and what items they have made available from their location(s).

See the Providers page

On the home page and on the Providers page, you will see a map of the island with pinned locations for all active Providers in the system.

The home page shows blue markers for all active Providers but doesn't indicate anything else about who the Providers are and if they have anything available at the moment. This is to give some general information to the public, but not give away all the detailed infomation reserved for users who have signed in. We want them to become users to get all the good stuff and to participate in the exchange process that will help keep item quantities current as Providers add more to their location and Consumers collect items from them.

The most useful information is on the Providers page, which can only be viewed by people who have an account and are signed in. On this page, Green Markers indicate that a Provider that is active and has at least 1 item available at the time the page was last loaded. Red markers indicate locations of Providers that are 'active' in the system but do not have any items available at the moment.

The Providers page has a table of all Providers that can be sorted and filtered as needed to find what you are looking for.
